Job Description

Major Responsibilities:

  • A. Works with the Patient Command Center and coordinates staffing for the facilitation of safe and efficient patient throughput and global distribution of staffing resources. 1. Oversees operational efficiency and utilization of labor resources of the assigned shift in collaboration with unit-based charge nurses to ensure HPPD and LCE targets are met 2. Participates in daily safety and capacity huddles 3. Makes staffing recommendations and assignments at identified levels of competency as determined by state law, hospital policy, and regulatory agencies for the provision of safe and high-quality patient care. 4. Solicits feedback on customer needs by performing ongoing assessments and rounding and shares findings offering suggestions for improvement. Customers include patients, visitors, physicians, and staff. 5. Works with teams to develop, implement and track results of quality improvement activities contributing to overall quality of care, KRA goals and regulatory requirements 6. Understands departmental productivity measures and uses monitoring, data reports, technology and assessment tools to assess the effectiveness of work hour and labor cost efficiency 7. Gathers, records, and responds to staffing needs according to fluctuations in staffing and census updating AdvocateWorks schedule as needed. 8. Provides correspondence with outside agencies for the management of agency resources as needed.
    • 1) Addresses problems and conflicts, which arise between patients, families and health care providers
    • 2) Responds to patient and family needs in times of stress or crisis
    • 3) Ensures compliance to all regulatory/safety standards to provide optimal environment for the customer.
    • 4) Responds to and resolve patient, customer, and associate complaints in a timely fashion.
    • 5) Solicits feedback on customer needs by performing ongoing assessments/interviews of internal and external customers
    • 6) Reviews customer satisfaction survey results; set targets for improvement and implement appropriate action plans
    • 7) Holds associates accountable for customer service standards
  • 1. Works with teams to develop, implement and track results of quality improvement activities contributing to overall quality of care, KRA goals and regulatory requirements 2. Understands departmental productivity measures and uses monitoring, data reports, technology and assessment tools to assess the effectiveness of work hour and labor cost efficiency 3. Gathers, records, and responds to staffing needs according to fluctuations in staffing and census updating AdvocateWorks schedule as needed. 4. Provides correspondence with outside agencies for the management of agency resources as needed. A. Maintains Ongoing Operations During the Absence of Administrative Personnel. 25% 1. Initiates and responds to hospital wide emergency situations following FEMA guidelines for Emergency Management, mobilizing appropriate resources and personnel in a timely manner participating as a member of the incident command team 2. Addresses problems and conflicts which arise between patients, families and healthcare providers and provides appropriate support and service recovery. 3. Facilitates the process of drug/alcohol testing for cause according to hospital policy 4. Communicates significant concerns to the appropriate personnel including the administrator on call and executive leadership 5. Evaluates patient conditions as requested and helps staff problem solve clinical issues serving as a coach for chain of command in the absence of the nursing unit leadership 6. Ensures compliance to all regulatory/safety standards, follows HIPPA guidelines, interacts with the media regarding newsworthy incidents that involve the hospital
    • 1) Supervises uncommon administrative duties
    • 2) Manages hospitalwide emergency situations, mobilizing appropriate resources and personnel
    • 3) Acts as the primary contact person for issues concerning protective custody and unobtainable consents
    • 4) Facilitates the process of drug/alcohol testing for cause according to hospital policy
    • 5) Interacts with the press regarding newsworthy incidents that involve the hospital according to hospital policy
    • 6) Makes unit rounds receiving update on patient conditions from the nursing staff.
    • 7) Evaluates patient condition as requested
    • 8) Implements and evaluate standards of practice to ensure quality care
    • 9) Provides a structure to support associates in providing quality care by assisting in establishing standards of care, policies, procedures, and protocols in compliance with regulatory agencies
    • 10) Works with teams to develop, implement and track results of quality improvement activities continuing to overall quality of care. k. Benchmarks regularly with other organizations both within and outside of health care to identify best practices and develop action plans. l. Demonstrates behaviors that are age appropriate for the individuals in question.
  • C. Supports Team Member Engagement 25% 1. Provides input to Managers on learning and development needs of team members on assigned shifts, mentoring of new staff, and mentoring and identification of future leaders 2. Identifies and delegates work experience opportunities appropriately to develop skills in various areas 3. Promotes recognition of associates and celebrates accomplishments within and across teams 4. Identifies and purses opportunities for own self-improvement and leadership development including participation in hospital committees and projects, and attending internal and external conferences 5. Participates in departmental meetings and contributes to associate engagement and culture of safety improvements 6. Encourages idea generation and implementation 7. Role models a positive and inquisitive attitude 8. Embraces challenges and suggests new and improved methods regarding clinical operations of the hospital
    • 1) Provides input to Managers and Practice Leaders on needs of associates on assigned shifts
    • 2) Evaluates registry associates providing feedback to managers
    • 3) Utilizes skills of associates to enhance the performance of the team
    • 4) Identifies and mentor future leaders.
    • 5) Provides counseling and direction to all staff regarding professional and unit practice and use appropriate disciplinary measures when necessary.
    • 6) Delegates work experience opportunities appropriately to build associates' skills
    • 7) Helps staff to problem solve clinical issues.
    • 8) Acts as a resource person to staff for patient care problems, assisting in defining approaches and obtaining other expert help as needed. * Addresses issues directly with staff regarding unsatisfactory standards of care and communicate with the appropriate managers. * Identifies and encourages the development of leadership skills in staff. * Initiates disciplinary action according to hospital policy.
    • 9)Identifies and pursues opportunities for own self-improvement and leadership development.


Licensure:

  • Nurse, Registered (RN)


Education/Experience Required:

  • BSN required. At least four years' inpatient/acute care nursing experience. Previous charge nurse or leadership experience.


Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Required:

  • Strong clinical skills Problem solving & analytical ability. Exceptional communication skills. High level of customer service skills. Utilization of critical thinking in timely decision making
  • Current RN license in the State of Illinois. Specialty certification per hospital requirements. Board Certification within 2 years of hire date or when eligible


Physicial Requirements and Working Conditions:

  • Resiliency and flexibility to deal with a changing environment. Ability to work collaboratively with internal/external customers. Ability to demonstrate a commitment to patient safety, patient care and outcomes. Ability to prioritize independently and respond to multiple simultaneous requests. Ability to work in a fast-paced environment with established time constraints and in difficult situations. May be exposed to hazardous material and body substances.
  • Ability to lift up to 35 pounds without assistance. For patient lifts of over 35 pounds, or when patient is unable to assist with the lift, patient handling equipment is expected to be used, with at least one other associate, when available. Unique patient lifting/movement situations will be assessed on a case-by-case basis.
