KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Performs welder certification tests.
  • Responsible for scheduling and implementing Welder Trainee classes, including hands-on learning and classroom learning.
  • Follows the welding procedures (WPS) and provides both test plates and procedure qualifications records (PQR) for approval by the appropriate testing agency.
  • Functions as the company's welding instructor, including training new welders and training existing welders to make sure they are working to weld standards.
  • Sets up and scores weld tests all welding applicants, including making hiring/promotion recommendations based on weld test scoring.
  • Establishes techniques to interpret codes, standards, and specifications, including preparing and approving technical procedures and instructions.
  • Ensure records are kept up to date for PQRs.
  • Audits welding practices of current certified welders to ensure continued compliance with ASME and AWS standards.
  • Inspects completed an in-progress welds and make recommendations for improvements.
  • Updates non-destructive testing (NDT) standards as required.
  • Review jobs with special metals (stainless, aluminum, hastalloy etc.) to assure base material is correct and that filler metal and current shielding gases are used.
  • Follows the Welding Manual's procedure when following code welding shop orders and works with outside inspectors during an audit.
  • Assists the Quality Control Department on weld quality and appearance.
  • Research power sources, feeders, guns, consumables and all related welding equipment, as well as filler metals, shielding gases and techniques.
  • Collaborates with engineering to implement new material and welding procedures.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Educational requirements: (one of the following is required)
    • Bachelor's degree in welding or a related field plus 1 year of welding work experience.
    • Associate's degree in welding or a related field plus 2 years of welding work experience.
    • Trade school/Vocational school courses plus 4 years of welding work experience.
  • Meets all qualifications of an ASNT level II Certified Inspector.
  • Must be qualified and certified to do dye penetrant, mag particle and visual testing.
  • Meets all qualifications of a CWI (Certified Weld Inspector).
  • Understands and works according to appropriate codes (ASME section IX and AWS D.1, D1.3, 6, D14.6).
  • CWE certification preferred, with the ability to train other welders.
  • Knowledge of materials, fabrication, and product terminology.
  • Manufacturing Engineering Technician experience is preferred.
  • Microsoft Office skills required.
  • Ability to interpret drawings, blueprints, and engineering documents.
  • Effective written and verbal communications skills.
  • Highly motivated, strong leader, and self-dependent.
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to problem-solve.
  • Collaborative mindset and a calm demeanor.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS/WORKING CONDITIONS

To successfully perform the essential function of this position, employees must have the ability to:

  • Continuously lift/move up to 25 pounds; frequently lift/move up to 50 pounds; and occasionally pull up to 100 pounds with wheels (pallet jack).
  • Continuously stand; walk; use hands to finger, handle or feel; reach with hands and arms above shoulder height; stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl; talk; and hear.
  • Occasionally climb, balance, stoop, kneel, reach with hands and arms at waist level and below the waist, and work in limited space.
  • Specific vision abilities required include close vision, color vision, distance vision, peripheral vision and depth perception.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

While performing the duties of this position, the employee is continuously exposed to moving mechanical parts and extreme heat. The employee is occasionally exposed to high places, fumes or airborne particles and/or caustic chemicals. The noise level in the work environment is usually loud.
